Otu- Umuokpu Anambra, USA Association is a community of all paternal daughters of Anambra State of Nigeria with the core mission to promote and uphold the welfare and culture her members; and foster unity, love, and harmony among them. The group has since its inception shared the uniformity of their ancestry as a unifying tool for community development and bonding of sisterhood.
Otu Umuokpu is the greatest of all female forums in Igbo land. It is a robust social community in Igbo culture, a functional forum for women. Women in traditional Igbo society have been a force in political, legal, and social issues long before the colonization of Africa. Otu-umuokpu also plays a significant role in matters such as birth, marriage, death, and other traditional community affairs. Otu-Umuokpu is a collective of all daughters from a particular clan, village, town, or state, a group of native daughters, daughters of a common male ancestor. Membership of this forum is the absolute right of all women born of the same male lineage. Even when a woman marries outside the village or town setting, she remains Ada of her father’s community. They are the “daughters of the soil.”
In all social functions from marital rites to title taking, Umuokpu plays an important role. As an assembly, they are pampered and treated well, or they will raise hell, and no one wants to tango with them. Communities treat the children of Umuokpu mainly, even though they belong to a different clan or town. If the children of Umuokpu encounter difficulties, they and their families are welcomed to come back to the community as “umu Diana” (children of the citizen). They play a significant role in the preservation and promotion of peace in the communities.
The birth of Otu Umuokpu Anambra, USA Association, Inc began June 2009 with two ladies whose great mission was to unify all daughters of Anambra State in the United States of America and Nigeria and complete projects that will improve the quality of life of our women and children.
July 2009. six additional members added to help lay the foundation for this great vision: Otu – Umuokpu had her first general meeting and admission of her first seven new members, September of 2009, and admission of new members continued to present. Currently, the association functions at a capacity of seventy-one active financial members. The association has gone through its issues like any other organization at its formation stages, but the difference remains that the integrity of Otu- Umuokpu is in intact and members are actively moving forward. However, still, at her infancy stage, only one founder remain to the struggling structure of this great mission.
The distinctiveness of the meeting and the concise format of the organizing leaders’ management skills, made it less intimidating for any qualified individual to belong and participate. Furthermore, our motto “Love, respect, integrity, and service follows us always and together we can make a difference in the lives of our people.”
Our mission is to uphold the dignity of our culture and to strive for excellence in the community by enhancing the unification of sisters of a common ancestor by improving the quality of life of our community and creating a more productive society.
Projects: In 2012, we completed our first educational project reaching the majority of primary and secondary schools in the Anambra state of Nigeria by delivering reading books, and exercise books. In the US, we donated to the Shriners Hospitals, participated in Houston cancer walks, food banks and assisted in the feeding of the community during Thanksgiving. Our community services are ongoing, as one of our motto is service to the community. Our 3rd Induction ceremony will be June 10th 20117. The relentless efforts of all the Executives, the Board members and the entire members of Otu- Umuopku Anambra, USA Association, Inc will continue to be greatly appreciated.
The association has branches in Nigeria, Enugu, Onitsha, and Awka. In the United States: Houston as headquarter, Atlanta, Austin, and Dallas. Future branches may be added as the association grows.
